Is Android Spying its Users Secretly ?

The Android operating system has faced a lot of flak over the years for its huge number of privacy and security flaws.

Off late, the Google founded OS had seen many incidents of privacy concerns, mostly arising from seemingly innocuous applications designed to spy on the user's browsing habits and online shopping patterns, which would facilitate advertisers to target them with content of a more specific nature. Apps with spyware embedded in their code always pose a threat to your privacy.

A team of researchers from the German University  claims that as many as 234 Android apps could be tracking your activities online. The team from  the German Technical University Braunschweig have discovered about 234 apps that contain a very specific code designed to activate spyware that are inserted into these apps by means of ultrasonic sounds, produced upon visiting certain sites, using certain services online. Though originally designed to profile users based on their shopping habits, these apps could potentially be used to discover your identity on various devices, pinpoint your location and, affect online services like Bitcoin and Tor.

Asides from this, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute discovered that Android apps could be communicating with one another covertly, sharing sensitive information about the user. Apps that you granted permission to access your sensitive information may be designed to share this information with other apps.

Some reports even suggest that apps with Spyware could can actually be downloaded from the Google Play Store. A spyware called SMSVova was downloaded over a million times from Play Store by users, via a download for a System Update. This spyware is said to be able to track your location.

The very ads you see online every day are most probably, specifically compiled for you, because a number of apps which you thought were harmless have already leaked your personal information to advertisers. If you're an Android user, I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to put your phone down for a minute.

Samsung Competes with Apple's Autonomous Car Production Experiment

After Apple recently tested its self driving car on public streets in the US, Samsung entered the race to make its first self driving car. The South Korean tech giant recently received approval to test the prototype of its self driving vehicle in the streets of Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

According to sources, the government statement mentioned that Samsung had been allowed to test run its prototype on a Hyundai car fitted with cameras and sensors, on Monday.

Samsung is the first tech company to receive permission from the South Korea administration to test a self driving vehicle on the South Korean roads.

Apparently Samsung has actually been looking into the technology to produce autonomous driving as ealry as late 2015. In late 2016 it bought the American firm Harman which produces software and components for connected cars for $8 billion. In February Samsung is said to have invested in TetraVue, a tech firm developing 3D technology that is to enable autonomous vehicles to detect obstacles in front of them.

Driverless car technology is already a congested field with many tech companies like Apple and Google and the big players of the automobile industry like General Motors and Ford looking into it. Even Uber is said to have been interested in the project.

APPLE's new Autonomous Vehicle on SELF DRIVING Platform

Apple Inc outlined a plan to train operators of self-driving cars in documents submitted to California regulators earlier this month, the latest clues to the company's autonomous vehicle technology aspirations.
Apple was granted a permit to test self-driving cars on April 14 by the California Department of Motor Vehicles but the company has never said anything about its plan.
The state released 41 pages of Apple application documents to Reuters that give some clues about the company's highly secret self-driving effort, which it has never openly acknowledged.
The iPhone maker joins a long list of carmakers, start-ups and technology rivals, including Alphabet's Waymo, that are testing cars on state roads. Apple is looking for new hit products and autonomous car technology is expected to revolutionise the traditional auto industry.
As part of the application, Apple included a 10-page training plan that appeared to be related to operators taking back manual control of the car during automated driving exercises of the system, which it calls a development platform.
Apple declined to comment beyond the filing.
The plan includes a document called "Automated System: Development Platform Specific Training Overview" whose objective is "to train safety drivers in various automated driving conditions."
"Development platform will be controlled electronically (e.g. joystick) and safety drivers must be ready to intervene and take control," the document reads.
The document highlights different scenarios to be tested, from high-speed driving and tight U-turns to lane changes.
One letter sent from Apple to the state Department of Motor Vehicles noted that Apple's development platform "will have the ability to capture and store relevant data before a collision occurs."
The document does not include detail on how Apple's self-driving platform actually works or other technical details. It also does not say what kind of sensors are found on Apple's three permitted vehicles, all 2015 Lexus model RX450h.
The permit does not necessarily mean that Apple itself is building a full car. Apple could instead be designing a self-driving platform that can be integrated into other manufacturer's cars.

"VIRTUAL Imagination" to "REALITY"- FACEBOOK New Brain APP to be released

Giving a glimpse of what is going on at its secret “Building 8″ research group, Facebook has said it is working on a way to let people type with their brains — at speeds faster than physical typing — via a brain-computer interface.
“We are working on a system that will let people type with their brains. Specifically, we have a goal of creating a silent speech system capable of typing 100 words per minute straight from your brain — that’s five times faster than you can type on a smartphone today,” Regina Dugan, Vice President of Engineering and “Building 8,” told the audience at the annual F8 developers conference in San Jose.
Facebook announced two projects from “Building 8″ that are focused on silent speech communications.  ”Building 8″ is the product development and research team at Facebook focused on creating and shipping new, category-defining consumer products that are social first.
Products from “Building 8″ will be powered by a breakthrough innovation engine modeled after US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and shipped at scale, the company said. Just like people take many photos and choose to share only some of them, Facebook’s new project will decode words that people have already decided to share by sending them to the speech centre of the brain.
“It’s a way to communicate with the speed and flexibility of your voice and the privacy of text. We want to do this with non-invasive, wearable sensors that can be manufactured at scale,” Facebook added. The company also unveiled a project directed at allowing people to hear with their skin and it is building the hardware and software necessary to deliver language through the skin.

IPhone developed for -$300

Scotty was asked by a friend of his, about the possibility of building a cellphone from scratch.

Driven to work on this, Scotty went parts hunting through the markets of Shenzhen,China where he currently resides part time.

First, he bought a used but relatively new back cover, the shell in which the entire circuitry of the device is placed, in a cellphone market in Shenzhen. The he bought all the parts required to compose the screen like the LCD, the backlight, OCA(Optically Clear Adhesive), digitizer. He had them put together to make a screen in a cellphone repair shop. Then he bought the battery, required to power the device.

THe circuitry however proved to be a daunting task as finding ICs that were compatible with the panel he bought was difficult. Finally having found, the compatibile ICs he had the logic boards made, tested and tweaked out any faults.

Finding the remaining parts like the both the front and back cameras were relatively easy and so also the speakers.

Finally having acquired all the required little parts, he started to put them together.  And finally at the end of one month he was able to build his own iPhone 6S from scratch.

Although he spent around a $1000, he says he actually ended up using only $300 dollars worth of the parts as he didn't really need  the rest

U.S.A. "Injects" itself in the World Network of Banks

The Shadow Brokers, a group of hackers, known for releasing a malware used by the National Security Agency, (NSA) of the United States has struck yet again.

This time they have released a set of digital tools also referred to as "exploits", alleged to have been created by the NSA along with documents that suggest a breach into the SWIFT global banking system.

The SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Inter-bank Financial Telecommunication) is a network that facilitates banks to carry out financial transactions, the world over in trillions of dollars every day and also serves as an inter-bank messaging medium. Smaller banks of the SWIFT network make use of service bureaus to handle monetary transfers in their stead. The documents that had been leaked imply that one such bureau has been penetrated. The exploits also include the "Zero Day", a vulnerability in Windows that was discovered quite recently.  One researcher looking in to matter said"The exploits released could be worth about $2M on the black market"

The documents that surfaced on the web, directly suggest that the NSA has been snooping on the financial management of SWIFT, especially details linked to certain Middle Eastern and some Latin American countries.

Edward Snowden took to Twitter to tweet "Mother of All Exploits", clear a reference to the bomb, the US military dropped in Afghanistan.

This could be the biggest scandal to hit the NSA (that we know of), since Snowden exposed them back in 2013.

In response, SWIFT said " We have no evidence to support any unauthorised breach into our network or messaging services".

Samsung & Apples "Bixby Voice Control"- It's Posponed !!

The much awaited Bixby Voice Control to be postponed

The Bixby voice control, the Samsung counterpart to Apple's Siri was revealed to the general public at a special event, this past month. Supposed to debut on Samsung's new flagship devices, the S8 and the S8+, it appears that, Samsung has suffered a delay.

It created quite a buzz as it promised users to help in searching and categorizing their gallery media and access information on their devices verbally.

Unfortunately, the S8 and the S8+ will now be sold without the voice control for Bixby.

On the other hand, the Google Voice Assistant, which is currently a standard part of the Android Operating System shall be provided to the devices. Also, the Korean version of Bixby' voice control has not faced any delay.

The tech giant announced that the whole version of Bixby will be made available by means of an update. Samsung did not give any reason, but the tests conducted prior to the launch declared that Bixby's software was not up to the expectations of the hype it managed to create.

Samsung said that the highlights of Bixby include Vision, Home and Reminder which will be provided on the devices upon release of the Galaxy S8. The Bixby Voice will be a available to the United States, this spring.

The S8 and the S8+ which awed the experts, have been projected as Samsung's redemption from the Note 7's exploding battery fiasco, which resulted in the recall of over 2.5 million devices over the world and an estimated loss of $17B to Samsung

Microsoft: - Vulnerability in Word exploited by scammers, to be fixed at the earliest.

The recently discovered bug known as "Zero- day" had been reported over the weekend.

On 10 April, officials of Proofpoint, a leading cybersecurity company, announced the discovery of an email campaign which preyed upon the bug, thus disseminating the Dridex malware.

Dridex is intended to infect a victim's device and snoop on on
e's banking logins.

It was claimed in 2015 that hackers stole about £20m from British banks

The insecurity, so uncovered in numerous versions of MS-Word permitted malicious software such as Dridex to be installed on computers, without the User's knowledge.

TRAI Crabs JIO for market accruing monopoly

Following a TRAI order, the Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer has been cancelled – putting an
end to the operator’s free services. With the Jio summer offer, customers could get
three months of free 4G data just the Rs. 99 Jio Prime subscription, and
a Rs. 303 recharge. But with TRAI cancelling the Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer,
some Jio users may have to start paying for services sooner than they expected to.
On the other hand, it is still not too late to avail benefits of Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer
as Reliance Jio is yet to roll it back - Jio said the process of rolling it back may
take a couple of days. Have all you questions around the Jio 'Summer Surprise'
 offer answered below.

What is Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer?

Reliance Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer provides Jio Prime members with free services for three months (from the date of recharge) in accordance to the plan they chose. If you choose the Rs. 303 recharge as a Jio Prime user, you will get 1GB data per day, along with 100 free SMSs per day, and free access to Jio apps suite. Similarly, those who buy the Rs. 499 plan get 2GB data per day, and other benefits. The Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer provides 100GB data for duration of 3 months to Prime users who buy recharges of Rs. 999 or more. Once the complimentary services end in July, the recharge pack of Rs. 303 or higher value will kick in – the first month of paid Jio services.

Why did TRAI cancel Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer?

TRAI Chairman RS Sharma has said that the regulatory body asked Reliance Jio to cancel the promotional offer as it did not comply with the regulatory framework.

When is Jio ‘Summer Surprise’ offer last date?

With the new order issued by TRAI, Jio 'Summer Surprise' now stands cancelled. Reliance Jio has agreed to roll it back, but has not announced a concrete Jio ‘Summer Surprise’ offer last date yet. In a statement, the telecom operator said the promotional scheme will be withdrawn “as soon as operationally feasible.”

Can I still get Jio ‘Summer Surprise’ offer benefits?

Yes. Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer is available via the Jio official website and MyJio app. If you are not a Prime member yet, then you need to enrol for the subscription plan. When you open the page for Jio Prime subscriptions, you will not find at present the option to do the Rs. 99 recharge, as was the case earlier. Instead, you will be presented with a list of plans you can buy to avail Jio 'Summer Surprise' benefits. Just tick the box next to the plan you want, and hit the Buy button. The next page will show you that the Rs. 99 Jio Prime subscription fee has already been added to your checkout cart. Simply proceed to make the payment and enjoy 3 months of free services.
However, it is important that you buy subscription and recharge as soon as possible since we don’t know any particular date the Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer will be rolled back permanently.

If I already have Jio Prime, do I still get Jio 'Summer Surprise' benefits?

If you are a Jio Prime member and have already purchased a recharge of Rs. 303 or higher value, then you will get Jio 'Summer Surprise' benefits for three months. If you are a Jio Prime user but are yet to purchase a recharge of Rs. 303 or more, then you need to buy the recharge pack as soon as possible to continue free services till July.

What happens if I don’t get Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer?

If you choose not to avail the Jio summer offer, you will soon have to start paying for all services except calls. On March 31 – the original last day for Jio Prime enrolment – the operator had provided a grace period of 15 days to customers who had not signed up yet; in this grace period, the free services were to continue. But with the TRAI order to cancel Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer, it is not clear if this grace period has also been withdrawn.  So if the grace period is rolled back sometime soon, you will have to start paying for services as a non-Prime user.

When is Jio Prime last date?

The last date for Jio Prime subscriptions will still continue to be April 15 as the TRAI order does not affect it.
